A stoneware jug by Michael Cardew OBE (1901-1983) with painted decoration in iron on a pale greenish-grey glaze. Cardew was an English studio potter who worked in West Africa for twenty years, where he founded the Abuja Pottery. He studied with Bernard Leach in 1923 and was influenced by the style of Shoji Hamada. Impressed potter's mark to base.
